2006 Nissan Altima or 2006 Honda Civic??

Question:
Either the Altima 3.5 SE or Civic LX. Both manual trans. I like both, it just seems that the civics are in such high demand that there isn't much room for negotiation, while they're giving the altima's away. Also, the awesome new 2007 Altima is coming in the fall but I can't wait that long. Should I still go for the 2006?

Answers:
I personally think the Civic is a little overratted -- my brother bought the 4-cyl auto trans because of the fuel economy (epa estimates 40 hwy/30city --plus he doesn't know how to drive a manual trans). He commutes about 40 miles round trip (though that might be a stretch) and a large portion of that is highway -- and he didn't quite get that fuel efficiency. I drove it for a while and didn't like the design -- the way I can't see any portion of the front end/hood through the windshield, the whole "heads up" spedometer (which is only pushed back from where it would be if the dashboard wasn't so large, which is why the front end is so small). I do have to admit, though, it does have a lot of interior room, though. I had to bring a table to my brother's new place in S. Fla. and the Civic did fit a 3 ft. by 5 ft table (without legs) comfortably when I put the back seats down. It also had a lot more room than I thought as I was helping him move some other things to his place.

As far as the Altima, that's more in the same leage as Honda's Accord (which is a step up from the Civic). I test drove that and liked it -- it had plenty of room, drove nicely, and looks more like a car. If you really want a new car now, the Altima might be a better option since the Civics are hard to come by and frankly seem to be a little overpriced -- but it's all your preference. Test drive them, checkout edmunds.com and do a comparison. And check with your insurance company to see what you would be paying -- remember that the Civic might be a more tempting target for theft in some areas of the country (especially a manual trans because of street racing). but that's in some areas. but definately do your homework and test drive to see which one you feel fits yor lifestyle best.

I still prefer the Honda Civic. The fact that it's so in demand means that it must be good, right?
I drive a 2006 Honda Civic, and I really like it. I had a 2003 Altima and drove it 68,000. Before I traded it I asked the Nissan dealer if there was ANYTHING that needed servicing. The only thing they could find was the fact that the battery needed cleaning, at a cost of $19. In 68,000 that was the only repair bill I needed, and I never needed to claim on the warranty. It was an exceptional car the entire time I owned it. I only traded it because I wanted to upgrade to an Acura TL.

I recently test drove a 2006 Civic for my wife, and I found that despite all the awards it was disappointing to drive, sluggish and loud. I was deeply unimpressed. On top of that in this area Honda dealers think they are selling BMWs because they are arrogant, rude, won't move much on the price, and only offer a 36,000 mile warranty whereas the Nissan dealers are far more flexible and the power train is a 60,000 mile warranty.

With the Civic having won so many awards and Honda dealers being so arrogant, you are not going to get an amazing deal on one. However, the Altima is soon going to be replaced with some new looking model (so you claim) which will make them far more interested in doing a deal on the old models. The Altima is also a bigger, quieter car with a nice stereo. The 3.5 is plenty fast, but I believe it requires premium gas.

For me the Altima wins hands down. Whichever you buy though, you shouldn't go far wrong. Both are good quality cars. Nissan Altima!!
