Is a hybrid car really the way to go these days with the gasoline prices being so high?

Question:

Answers:
ABSOLUTELY NOT. They cost soooo much more than their gas counterparts it would take well over 160,000 miles to break even in gas savings, assuming you have no problems with the hybrid technology. Also, what many people don't take into consideration is the battery packs which need to be replaced every couple years and they are very expensive. In a recent AutoWeek magazine, they tested a Prius and a VW Jetta Turbo Diesel on a road trip and the Jetta actually got better gas mileage (Prius: 42mpg / Jetta: 50mpg). If you want a car that gets good gas mileage and is environmentally friendly, get a diesel VW TDI. Diesel Technology is already tested and the new TDIs are quiet and cleaner than ever. The car will pay for itself in savings in about 50,000 miles. Also, they can run on petroleum-free biodiesel.

Other Answers:
it depends. sometimes it takes too long to charge and sometimes it's perfect. i've heard that it can also go up to 60 mph only. this car seems perfect for teens that dont have jobs or dont make much. it might be hard to find places to charge or to charge in ur garage. it could be a disaster if u run out on the road, though. that's why i would get one that runs on both if i could so i wouldnt run out of either in case of a road trip or something.

Nope, here's a better idea. Buy a used diesel car and run it off of old cooking oil. That's completely free fuel! It works, and often works better then gas.

Here's a site about biodiesel.

sure, if you can afford one. not really. in my opinion its just a matter of budgeting everything. you can get an economy compact with low maintenance car. who knows how much it cost to maintain a hybrid since its not that mainstream yet.might end up spending more in the long run.
its just the hype.

No, they say that the hybrid car won't pay for itself unitl you've owned it for at least 9 years. By that time (or sooner), you will probably have traded it in. I think the honda civic hybrid is the most bang for the buck. the others are nice, but so much more expensive.

Yes.
Hybrid has good fuel economy and eco!
Everybody, don't think about just your money. Think about the earth! Stop the global warming! It depends on the model. Some hybrids are much more expensive than their gasoline counterparts, others not so much. The Ford Escape Hybrid is the most fuel efficient SUV out there and it's about $3000 more (not including tax incentives) than a similarly equipped conventional Escape. According to the EPA, an Escape XLT AWD uses $2085 worth of gasoline a year (based on 15,000 mi at $2.91 a gallon) whereas the hybrid uses $1415 - a annual saving of $670. Therefore it'll take about 4.5 years to recoup the money you spent on buying the hybrid......BUT if gas prices go up you'll easily make your money back a lot sooner. Hybrids make sense. Like anything else, people will realize this too late, perhaps when gas prices hit $4.00 a gallon this summer.
