2 channel or mono amp.?

Question:
If i want to power 2 400w RMS Dual Voice Coil 10 inch subs can I wire them at 2 ohms and if so would I need a mono amp with minimum 800W RMS at 2 ohms or would I use a 2 channel amp and wire each one separately at 2 ohms using a minimum 400W RMS per channel @ 2 ohms amp? Is one way beter than the other?

I have rockford wiring diagrams for separate @ 2 ohms and together @ 4 ohms but am not sure how to wire them at 2 ohms and which amp?

Your system won't mean squat without a well designed box to put your subs in. Some manufacturers have recommendations as to dimensions of various types of boxes. It is best to find someone who builds boxes if you go with something other than a sealed box.

You should always match up RMS (Root Mean Square) watts of Subs and amp per channel as well as impedance's(resistances).

If your amp is rated at 4Ω don't subject it to 2Ω, it will fry.

Here is the formula for subs in parallel:

Z = 1 / (1/sub1 + 1/sub2 + 1/sub3 + ....)

For series, just add them up (sub1 + sub2 + ...).

You can mix and match these equations to get the right impedance required by your amp.

Example: 4 subs @ 4Ω each. If I connect two in parallel and the other two in parallel and tie the two pairs in series, I would have a total impedance(resistance) of 4Ω. So to the amp, it's just one sub.

You should use a capacitor as well.

Recommend for every 500 watts MAX you use a .5 Farad cap
Example: 1000 watts MAX - 1 Farad cap

Try http://www.soundomain.com/shop you can find some really good deals, and this site is manufacturer certified. VERY IMPORTANT WHEN SHOPPING ON-LINE!!!

You will also need what's called a "line level converter" if your stock head unit doesn't have RCA outputs or your amp doesn't have high-level inputs.

If you like I can send you some plans for reference. My plans are for a 4-th order band pass bass box that holds two 12's. Also included are java calculators you can use to figure parallel and series values given Ω values.
Just e-mail me sparky3489@yahoo.com

I chose Blaupunkt TSw1200 subs with a Sony Xplōd XM2200GTX and it moves my coffee table around when I'm in the driveway.

My amp is 1200 watts, subs are 600 watts

Do the two channel thing you'll get better boom!

I would recommend going with the mono block amplifier. Internally, the mono amplifier is designed to work with just one output and has a power supply and MOSFETS for it. A 2-channel amplifier is meant to run, basically, in stereo. You'll also save some money on an 800 watt mono as opposed to a 400x2 2-channel. Well I work with car audio everyday. Your best bet for the best sound is to run 2 seperate mono amplifiers with a rating of 400 watts@2 ohms, to accomplish this run the positive output of the amp into the positive of the first voice coil, then connect the negative of the first voice coil to the positive of the second voice coil then run the negitive of the second voice coil back to the negative on the amplifier. Or you can get a two or four channel amp with a 200watt rating per channel. if you use a two channel you will also require two amplifiers as one channel will run one voice coil and will run the system with a 4ohm impedence. Same with a 4 channel however you'll only need one and each channel runs one voice coil at 4 ohms. Hope this helped you.

Hey.. it is better to go for a streo amp and not go for a mono. I have same setup in my mitshubishi lancer and i also tried with a mono. But stereo is better.

if you get a mono amp you will drop the ohms down to about 1/2, and your fuses will only last about 1 second so go with a 2 channel
