Good luck!
most important thing to do first is wash it.
Unlike a human body your bike engine can not get rid of contaminants.
If you rush in, pull out a spark plug and a single grain of sand goes in to the cylinder you will do more damage than not doing any thing.

Second most import thing
air pressure in your tyres - get a digital guage, don't trust the guage at the gas station. Check and adjust pressure on cold tyres only and do it every week. Generally 33 psi front 39 rear on most road bikes

3rd thing-
chain tension. a bit tricky for the mechanically inept but most people can get the hang of it sooner or later. Too tight stops your suspension working, causes excessive chain wear and can damage your gearbox. Too lose, it is noisy and can fall off,

4th thing - chain lubrication. I personally use Bel-ray for my road bike. use a wax for dirt

5th thing - oil and filter change
6th thing - tappet clearance
7th thing - when washing look for oil leaks, especially around fork seals and engine
8th thing - learn to adjust your suspension for the load you are carrying
9th thing - chech your brake pads

join a club. There is usually a social motor cycle club, usually friendly, familiy orientated (not like hells angles) and they usually have regular service days where you can go along and learn off other riders for free, that's where i met my wife and we now have three kids. :) how's that for service
Change oil & filter often, keep air filter clean, check tire pressure, don't use cheap gas, keep chain adjusted. That's about it.
Regurly oil and check the chain tension.

Thats the most important thing for a newbie biker to remembler, otherwise everything else is similar to car maintainance
Buy three tools.

A hammer.
A big hammer.
A really big hammer.

That should do really.
