i need more confidence with riding my SV 650 S, help please?

Question:
i've been riding bikes for about 18 months now, and i've had my SV for a year. i recently moved to portugal, so i dont have the option of taking advanced driving lessons, so what can i do to improve my confidence? i've dropped the bike 3 times already, all at practically standing speeds and done more damage to myself than the bike, but i'm underconfident at low speeds, especially on uneven surfaces. i'm pretty good with the clutch and brake, i don't rev the engine like a maniac, so what can i do? serious help needed please!

Answers:
Practice and practice till you are confident in your skills then go out and practice more.

The biggest things to remember is never apply the front brake at low speeds and in a turn.

As long as you have power to the rear wheel the bike will not fall over.

Here is a web site you can order a video from and download a practice guide.(second link)

The friction zone is the area of the clutch between completely open and completely closed. Let's begin. Now, pull the clutch in and put the motorcycle in 1st gear. Put your right foot on the brake, begin by letting the clutch out and begin feeding a little throttle and stay in the friction zone.
You should be feathering the rear brake so that it holds the motorcycle back slightly. You now have 3 ways to control your motorcycle, the clutch, the throttle and the rear brake. You must keep power to the rear wheel and stay in the friction zone and feed a little throttle.

find someone who is a good driver and have them show you some things, though a rider course would be best

I have a SV650 2004. It's my first bike. The best advice I could give you is practice in an empty parking lot. I don't think that there's a trick out there that will make you a good driver in a second. Practice, practice, practice, that's the key. Take an MSF course. You will learn all the right habits from the get go and will increase your confidence by leaps and bounds due to the skills you will learn.

I agree with JeffAV. A professional rider course, where you can test your limits (and the bikes) on a closed course, would be very helpful to you. You already have a great bike, so you just need to understand it's dynamics.

Like the guy said, practice.

But practice what? I have some handbooks that have practice exercises in them. I don't have them with me, but I'm going to see if I can find anything online for you.

Mainly, remember to keep your head UP, you go where you look, and speed stabilizes.

This link will take you to an index, which lists all kinds of references. The first two in particular have riding tips and actual practices laid out for you.

If you can find an empty parking lot or some such to do this, you'll be improving in no time!

http://www.msf-usa.org/index_new.cfm?spl=2&action=display&pagename=Library Riding uneven surfaces on an SV sounds difficult to begin with because of it's extreme riding position. Know that SV's ergonomics are similar to full on sport bikes. Especially the SV's "S" verson. I commend you for not giving up after a few spills.

At low speeds: (1) try to keep you head up and looking out, not down at the ground. (2) try using your rear brake only when attempting that u-turn or any low speed maneuvers.

Many SV "S" owners opt for taller after-market handle bars to counter the "S" version's more hunched over riding position.

Hope this helps, ride safe. Balance is not A born trait. Clumsiness is. tRY working on getting stronger physically. Possibly you may be a tad to short for that bike. You may be intimidated and a little uneasy only because you have dropped prior. Only through practice, riding experience, and unfortunately, alittle pain can we get better. Try taking some moderate risks. Building your confidence is the key.Risk Is pure a adrenalin. The more the merrier. Happiness is riding with the risk factor.Pure is bliss when you feel you are one control wise with your machine.
