What do you think?

Question:
I have always had a passion for motorcycles. I have just recently decided that I am going to purchase one. Today I went and priced them out. After I priced them out I went over to my friend’s house to think about it. I decided to leave and grab some lunch and just in front of his house right then was a motorcycle accident. Some kid in a truck was turning left and the motorcyclist was heading straight. The kid didn't see the motorcyclist and hit him causing the motorcyclist to be ejected from his bike smacking his head and ribs against the curb and messing his bike up. They had to take him to the hospital. My question is should I take this as a warning from some higher figure not to get a bike? Is someone trying to tell me something? I mean what are the odds that something like that would happen on the same day that close to me?

Answers:
If you drive a car, you're 0.00209% likely to die in a car crash.
If you ride a motorcycle you're 0.00667% likely to die in a motorcycle crash. The fact is it's more dangerous than driving a car. However, here are some other facts:

In 2002, in the United States, various common or noteworthy causes of death were:
Heart Disease: 696,947
Cancer: 557,271
Stroke: 162,672
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 124,816
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 106,742 <-- includes motorcycle accidents
Diabetes: 73,249
Influenza/pneumonia: 65,681
Alzheimer's disease: 58,866
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 40,974
Septicemia: 33,865
Suicide: 30,622
Murder: 16,110
Capital punishment: 71

First educate yourself. And then, if you get an answer to prayer about it trust the answer to your prayer more than you trust what you learn in books.

Yeah, maybe you should postpone buying for a while. Just hold on to that passion till the right time comes. I was born with some kind of "gift" so i believe that the accident was sort of warning to you. If you are going to ride a motorcycle, you have to accept the one basic truth: "there are two kinds of riders: those that have crashed, and those that have just not crashed yet." Cars are blind to motorcycles and drivers are often careless. Motorcyclists are at an extreme disadvantage out there on the roads. If you can't accept this, then you should not be on a bike. You'll be tense and borderline paranoid and it will be a horrible experience. If you can accept this, and know that no matter what the cars do, your preparedness and alertness may save your life, then you are ready for a bike. But if you are looking for guidance or signs from god that you are or are not meant to ride a motorcycle, then my opinion is you are not ready to get a bike. No offense! But you cannot put even the most basic of decisions regarding a motorcycle into the hands of "a higher power." When you are on a bike, YOU have to be completely in control and until you can really think that way, you'll be putting yourself at even more risk every time you ride.

If someone was riding their bicycle in the street and some careless kid in a truck T-Boned him, would that prevent you from ever getting a bicycle?

Look at it as a warning on what you should do before you go out and buy a motorcycle. Sign up for a MSF class and learn how to ride and what safety equipment you should have while you ride.

Being a motorcyclist I learned to look for people that may not see me, you learn to look for eyeballs looking right at you as well as other indications of what they may do, if not you must prepare yourself if the person is going to pull out or make a left in front of you. On a motorcycle you can't predict everything, but then again there is a danger in everything we do, we just have to accept that danger and then, and only then we can enjoy ourselves.

i am a firm believer that god has a plan for everyone. it will not matter if you are riding a motorcycle or sitting in front of your tv set, when the good lord up above wants you he takes you. as for the sign, i think he knew you were thinking about getting one and wants you yo be aware of what could happen. statistics show more people die from auto accidents than from motorcycle accidents, so the choice is yours to make. good luck with your choice. LIVE TO RIDE, RIDE TO LIVE ! well....it could mean, dont get a bike, but it could also mean be safe on it, i bet you ten to one that guy that got hit wasnt wearing a reflective vest, i wear a reflective vest and full safety gear, winter or summer because its safety that is the key element of everything, anyway, as long as you are safe your going to be ok, just remember, you either have gone down or you will go down, bottom line.

motorcycle rider for over 6 years and have been on multiple safety and skill courses

Interpreting omens isn't easy. You really have to go with your gut on that. But you're not hurting anything if you postpone your decision for a while, right?

One other way to look at it is as a warning to be careful, and a suggestion from on high (or low, whatever) to take the MSF safety course. every time you get on the bike you take a chance on some cager runnin you over. thats why you have to be more than just extra carfull. got smacked by 2 cars and 1 ambulance(if you can believe that crap!) in less than a year a while back, but i aint given up my bike ridn.
