I recently had the opportunity to drive a Toyota Corolla. It was awesome for fuel efficiency. I normally drive a Honda Accord V6 and I think that car does pretty well. But I was driving this Toyota 40 miles five days a week and didn't have to fill the tank for two weeks.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bestworst.shtml Hybrids offer the best solution in terms of fuel economy and emissions. Diesel offer great fuel economy but they also pollute more than a hybrid. However, diesels are a great solution if you're concerned about reliability and repair costs of hybrids.
